You Must Be Present to Win: Five Steps to Unshakable Self-Trust
What does it mean to truly trust yourself? After winning North America's Next Greatest Speaker competition, I'm sharing the profound wisdom that emerged from my journey through grief following the loss of my 18-year-old son. When tragedy unplugged everything I thought I knew about myself, I discovered a deeper truth: presence is the pathway to the soul.
Many of us spend years searching for our authentic selves—buying books, taking courses, hiring coaches—when what we're seeking has been within us all along. Your soul doesn't ask who you are; it simply invites you to trust what lights you up from the inside out. In this raw, unfiltered conversation, I explain how grief shattered my thinking mind into fragments, forcing me to drop into the "basement of my being" where my soul resides. This involuntary descent revealed that the soul isn't a fixed persona we're trying to become, but rather a fluid, dynamic blueprint of our potential that we can only access in the present moment.
The five-step process to unshakable self-trust I shared in my award-winning speech offers a practical path forward: decide what to trust, know you can create it, take aligned action, create evidence, and let proof build belief. This approach doesn't require digging up limiting beliefs—it simply redirects your trust from limitation to possibility. When you trust your soul's guidance, you naturally stop doing things that insult your soul and start making choices that expand you.
The number one regret of the dying is that they lived someone else's life instead of being true to themselves. You don't have to wait for your life to get unplugged to decide who you truly are. Your authentic self isn't out there waiting to be found—it's right here, waiting to be trusted. Join me at my upcoming Sedona retreat this November or connect one-on-one to explore how presence can transform your life into one you'll have no regrets about when your time comes.

Speaker 1:Hello, beloved lights and souls, welcome to this week's episode of we Woke Up Like this I'm your host, rev Joya, with Vibology, just back from Dallas where I was competing in North America's Next Greatest Speaker competition and I won. I am North America's Next Greatest Speaker at eWomen Network and that's really kind of a big deal and I'm just so thrilled, so honored to be this year's winner of that. And it was really profound because my friend came to me right before and I mean like 45 minutes before I was supposed to go on stage and asked me if I was open to some coaching feedback and she's a pretty well-known speaking coach and I said, of course I'm open to your feedback, absolutely. And she advised me to change the whole beginning of my talk and I was like, whoa, this is the only part of it I actually have memorized, because my memory isn't as sharp as it used to be. Since Weston passed, like your hippocampus region of your brain gets really impacted by grief and I was like I can't memorize anything. But I know my story, I know what I want to share, I know the point of this. It's my information. It's not something that I had AI write for me. I know what this is and so I said, okay, I'm just going to drop into my heart and make these changes that she suggested.
Speaker 1:So I was backstage and I was kind of starting to freak out a little bit because I had this whole thing already. I had my beginning memorized and it's timed. So if you go over your time, they just shut off your microphone. So I knew my exact intro and I knew where the middle was and I knew my ending. But she wanted me to change my beginning and my ending, so I did, and when I was backstage and I was feeling really nervous, I dropped in and I had this awareness. That said, I already won, because I'm here with these two other incredible women who both have such beautiful messages, and I get to share this message already on this main stage, in front of these hundreds of women. So I already won. And when I had that thought, I just felt this feeling of gratitude well up inside of me and I didn't worry about it and I went on the stage completely relaxed, feeling like I already won because I get to share this message. And it honestly didn't matter to me if I won first place or not, because I already got to share my message. And so I just went there with that feeling and I just let my heart speak.
Speaker 1:The story and the message that I wanted to share with the audience, which was about doubt, and I've shared this before on my podcast already. I have a whole episode about this drop-in about doubt, and I've shared this before on my podcast already. I have a whole episode about this drop in, about doubt, and my talk was sharing how we spend all of our time, all these years, searching for this self, and there's a whole entire industry that's profiting, a multi-billion dollar industry that's profiting off of our self-doubt, the searching for who we are, and we buy all these books and we buy all these courses and we hire all these coaches and we do all these things trying to fill this call in us that is seeking us to find something, and my talk was about trusting yourself, because after, in grief, after Weston passed, I really found myself just thrown, hurled into this whole other way of being, which I have now come to recognize as being like the basement of my being, where my soul resides. And so it wasn't any longer about my mind and this mental masturbation up here that I used to love to do, this philosophizing and learning and intellectualizing and rationalizing, participating in this Western obsession with the brain and the mind and thinking, and instead my heart was just shattered open and my thinking became scattered. It was literally like my thoughts became shards of glass that just shot out of my mind and my mind just wouldn't shut up and it felt like a bunch of static in my brain. It was like every neuron just started firing at once. It was so chaotic and noisy in my brain, and so I was forced to drop deeply into my body, into my soul and into the feeling of grief, and I didn't let myself get stuck in it. I refused to let myself get stuck in it, and so I started turning toward.
Speaker 1:Your soul never asks you who you are. Your soul doesn't urge you to go seeking anything except your soul and all we have to do to ever seek our soul is what I want to talk about today, which is presence, presencing yourself. Because what I've really come to realize in all of this and this includes the reason I won the talk was because I was so present in myself, and that it's in the present moment that we access the soul, because the soul is an energy form. It's like it's a conduit. It's not a fixed thing. It's like it's a conduit. It's not a fixed thing. It's not like a fixed persona that we're trying to mold ourselves into, but rather it's a fluid, dynamic, expansive part of us that holds our blueprint and our design for who we are, our potentials, what we're capable of, what we're here for, what we're meant to blossom into the fullest expression of who we are. That we have a design that our soul holds as its blueprint. And when we step into that spaciousness of our soul, we're in the flow of the present moment, and in that flow state that's when your soul now is tapping into the current of the now moment, which is a literal force in the universe. It's a force of aliveness. So think about that right now.
Speaker 1:If you can close your eyes and just imagine, right now you're listening to these words and right now someone else is driving a car and right now the grass in your a car and right now the grass in your yard is growing and you can't see it, and a flower is opening and a leaf is falling off of a tree and a baby is being born and someone else is dying. There's like all these things happening in this now moment. It's really expansive and fascinating to feel into that, this now moment, and when you're in the state of flow, when you're very present, you're not thinking anymore because it's flowing through you. And by the time that you notice and become aware of what's flowing through you, it's already passed. These words you're listening to are already passed. And so there's like this edge, this razor thin edge of now that you can come to within yourself, where your life itself is unfolding, and this is where your soul is.
Speaker 1:And this is what I've come to realize is that it's already here, you're already it, you're already doing it. There's nowhere to get to except right now. Right now is all there is. And yes, we can make future plans and yes, we can set goals, but keep them flexible. I've really learned that Don't make them so concrete that you don't allow and you don't notice the synchronicities that begin to open up for you as you allow yourself to be present, moment in the soul, allowing it to express through you in a very natural way, which is what I'm doing right now. This is not. I don't have anything written down, I'm just dropping into the flow and trusting. And you know why? Because I've noticed that YouTube and podcasts, they all are starting to sound the same. Social media is all starting to sound the same and it's all starting to sound like this super polished AI. And I just watched an interesting YouTube talk this morning with Dr Amen and a couple of other people talking about how this overuse of AI is decreasing brain function. And I see it, I see it happening. It's like where's the soul? Where's the human, the soul, the messiness, the now, the creative, the juice, the passion, the heart, the love. And that's why I'm going to start recording these videos for YouTube. Also, because my business coach told me I need to start making videos for YouTube and not just audio. So I'm going to commit to doing that and making this podcast a video.
Speaker 1:But presence is such a gift, and in my book I'm working on my book now, which is these beautiful principles that Weston gave me from the other side that have helped me and are helping me to rebuild my life. Every day I wake up, I meditate, I do my yoga, I cry, and then I take a shower and I get dressed and I go about my day, and sometimes I cry again during the day. It just depends. If something arises in me that feels like grief, I cry, I let it out, dot my eyes with a Kleenex and go about my day because I stay present and I don't judge it. Presence is a huge part of the foundation to do the soul-led principles that are in this book, because you have to be present to win and that's what I titled the chapter of the book on presence is, you must be present to win Because it's only happening right now, because it's only happening right now and the mind, if we don't watch, our mind is always, always tripping in the past or tripping into the future, but it's hardly ever right here, right now, just noticing feeling inside the body, letting the words arise from the heart instead of the mind.
Speaker 1:And it's an entirely different way to live your life, and I've been throwing myself back into soul studies. I'm a psychosynthesis coach and a spiritual psychology coach. I'm one of those seekers who is overly credentialed and went finding all the things when what I was really looking for was my soul. But now, having all of these foundations, having all of this understanding of the soul, I'm revisiting now all of these things I've studied in the past which now land so differently with the wisdom and the knowledge and the embodied lived soul consciousness that I have now.
Speaker 1:And one of the most profound things that does bring us present is grief, and grief doesn't just come from death and grief doesn't just come from death. Grief can come from divorce, it can come from devastating loss, it can come from diagnosis, it comes from all kinds of things. There's lots of different shades of grief. Them invite you into a deeper part of yourself if you're willing to go there. And that means facing the feelings, facing the fears, facing all of those blocks, facing all of the stories, facing who you thought you were, that you're not including a very expensive persona in personal development that I built and created for myself only to just have it unplugged.
Speaker 1:Because when you're in grief and you go through this and you hit the bottom basement of your soul and you're standing there naked in the essence of just your soul and your bones. There's no more masks to put on. There's just no energy for it, let alone a desire for it, which is why awakening in grief is a powerful initiation and an invitation to keep present, and so I want to share my talk with you. I don't have the professional recording yet, but I will have that soon. But here I will share my talk with you because it's about doubt and it's about trusting yourself and the foundation for all of these seven principles for my upcoming book, which is going to be called Wake Up in the Game. Seven Principles for Living a Soul-Led Life, because Weston told me, mom, you have to teach people to wake up in the Game. Seven Principles for Living a Soul-Led Life Because Weston told me, mom, you have to teach people to wake up in the game. So that's what I'm here to do. That's what I'm doing, it's what my gene keys are all aligned to do, it's what my incarnation cross says I'm here to do.
Speaker 1:And it's really interesting. When you get into that place of living from your soul, it feels like your home, it feels like the part of you you've always been looking for the part of you. That's always somehow been constant and is there. It's almost as if someone was knocking at your door and instead of opening the door of the heart to let them in, you instead go out the back door and start looking everywhere for who's knocking at your door. Who could it be? What could that be knocking at my door? It's you, it's your soul, and so we want to step inside, and we can only do that in the present moment. And it arises in the present moment because the soul, essence is creative force itself. So I am here. I am here to assist and guide, waking up in the game, transmuting all of those sorrows, those traumas and grief and alchemizing it into creative force through creative expression, because that's what the soul does. But first we have to trust ourself. And so here's my talk.
Speaker 1:I stood looking in the mirror at myself, wondering who I am now. I had just invested and signed a new lease for a bigger space, which I'm sitting in right now. I had hired contractors to begin the construction of my space, and I had a plan, I had a vision, I had a system, I had strategies. For the first time ever, really, I knew exactly what 2025 was going to look like. Exactly what 2025 was going to look like and all of it.
Speaker 1:Everything I thought I was, everything I thought I knew, got unplugged in one moment when my precious 18-year-old son was killed in a car accident and I found myself naked to the bones of my being. And it didn't ask me who I am anymore. It was asking me to trust myself and to make that trust unshakable. But for months I went back and forth with myself, battling between trust and doubt, and I would ask how do I trust? And the answer was always let go. And I said but how do I let go? And the answer was always trust. And finally I said this is not helping me. Can you please teach me in a way that I will understand? And the message I received back completely transformed my reality and is helping me rebuild my life, and I want to share it with you. It said you are never not trusting something If you're in doubt. You're trusting in doubt, because doubt is trust placed in limitation. And I know that the word trust means a firm and reliable foundation. And to make mine unshakable, I only had to do one thing live the truth. And the truth is whatever lights you up from the inside out. It's what makes your soul feel alive and expanded and creative rather than drained. And the only time that you can do this is in the present moment. So I'm going to teach you the five-step process to trust yourself. So I'm going to teach you the five-step process to trust yourself.
Speaker 1:Number one decide what to trust. When you are standing in that space inside of you between fear and possibility, or doubt, and taking a risk, ask yourself which experience you want to have, because experiences are side effects of where you've placed your trust, and trust is the backbone for every decision you ever make. Number two know. Know beyond a shadow of a doubt that you can create that experience, your soul. The creator would not give you a vision without also giving you the ability to create it. So know you can Know it.
Speaker 1:Third, take aligned action, and this is probably the hardest thing for us to do. You won't have the whole map, you won't have the whole vision, but you can take the first aligned step right in front of you and let the light within you light the way before you, and walk it step by trust-led step. Fourth as you walk and as you take action, you begin to create evidence, and this evidence becomes proof that it is safe to trust yourself, that it is safe to listen to your soul, that it is safe to take risks. You're creating proof, and number five is my favorite and the thing that blew my mind the most Proof creates belief, and belief is what puts your mind and your habits on autopilot. And in doing this process, you are rewriting your limiting belief story without having to go dig for a single one, because your limits reveal themselves as you decide what to trust. And you decide to stop trusting in limits and then surround yourself with people who are visionaries, with people who also are trusting themselves and taking big risks, because they're going to see your light as you see theirs.
Speaker 1:And a very wise man said it is the privilege of a lifetime to become who you truly are. But none of us know how long a lifetime actually is, and you don't have to wait for your life to get unplugged for you to decide who you truly are. And who you truly are is not out there somewhere waiting to be found. It's right here, waiting to be trusted. Ask what your unshakables are by checking in with what lights you up, and then choose to trust it and follow it. And as you do, who you are is revealed in how you live your life, and that level of pure soul authenticity is the exact medicine that our world needs and that our world needs the same brilliant creator that makes the flowers bloom and be beautiful and the leaves change colors also urges you into the fullest expression of who you are too. But only you can answer it. So choose to trust that, not someday, but right now. That's the end of my talk. I am so honored to be crowned, microphoned as North America's next greatest speaker. I'm also doing a DebX, which is a speaking event here in Phoenix. I'll be on the stage November 18th, so I just invite you to practice being present in yourself and really start choosing to trust yourself.
Speaker 1:And you know it because you stop doing things that insult your soul, and we all know what those things are. It's that inner nagging that happens Every time you overeat, every time you take a drink, every time you don't go to the gym, every time you're doing something that you know is not good for you, and only you know what they are for you. But you know it. When you choose to stop doing the things that insult your soul and start doing the opposite, start doing the thing that's calling you forward into expansion. That's how you begin to change your life, and those changes happen right now, in the present moment. That's the whole thing. Right there, those choices, day in and day out, moment by moment, are what lead to transformation. Your life right now is the side effect of choices you've already made, and so to create something different, choose something different, choose to trust your soul and follow it, and this is how you live a life that you will have no regrets when you die. Because, along with that saying that it is the privilege of a lifetime to become who you truly are, the number one regret of the dying is that they lived a life for someone else, that they weren't true to themselves and they put other people's concerns about how their life should be ahead of what they wanted, and they regret it. So, while you still have time, listen to your soul, let your soul speak, let your soul walk, let your soul lead your life by practicing presence and just saying yes to one little thing at a time.
Speaker 1:I want to invite you to a retreat that I am co-facilitating with my dear friend Kelly in Sedona, arizona, november 13th through the 16th. The link is in my bio, but it's going to be an incredibly powerful, healing, healing retreat. And she and I did something really fun the other day. We uploaded our gene keys into my chat GPT and ran this thing about how we work together. What kind of dynamic do the two of us facilitate? And we are really a perfect yin and yang, it said. I'm an initiator, I'm a soul opener, and then she's the grounding force, the integrator. So this is just such a beautiful combination. I'm going to be doing sound and this incredible new process that I am rolling out to the public. So I'll be offering that at the retreat, along with holding space while we do soul prayers.
Speaker 1:A water ritual in Oak Creek. We're going to do a fire ritual. We're going to do yoni steaming. Obviously, this is for women only, so the link is in the bio. If you would love to go check out that retreat and I would love to see you there it's going to be really transformative and, as usual, if you're interested in a one-on-one session or download the meditation from my site, visit vibologycom. It's V-I-B-O-L-O-G-I-Ecom, and that's it for this week's episode. Stay present, trust yourself and let your soul lead your life. See you next week. Bye, thank you for listening to.
